Local SEO: 11 Steps to Position Your Company in Google Local Searches


As a local business owner, you constantly struggle to grow your business. But with so much competition in your area: how can you stand out?


The answer is Local SEO. By optimizing your Google Business Profile (popularly known as GMB, short from its former name, Google My Business), you will significantly increase your visibility and generate new customers for your local business.


But what exactly is Local SEO and how does it work?


Local SEO is the process of optimizing your Profile (GMB) to rank as high as possible in Google searches for your specialty and your location.


When potential customers search for a type of local business/service on Google, they will likely choose those that appear in the best results (ideally the top 3), and that have the best online reputation.


So how can you improve your Local SEO? Here I leave you some tips:


  • 1: Claim and optimize your Google My Business listing: Google My Business (GMB) is a free tool that allows you to manage your business information on Google, including your address, phone number, hours of operation, URL of your site website, etc. By claiming your GMB listing, it becomes yours forever, preventing Google from deleting it; and by optimizing it you increase your chances of appearing in the Pack of Three (the first three results that appear in a Google search, next to the map).


  • 2: You should also regularly add photos (geolocated if possible) of your business, to make your listing more attractive to your potential patients, and more relevant to Google.


  • 3: Keep all the information in your GMB Profile updated in case of any changes (schedule, phone number, etc.).


  • 4: Create local citations: A citation is any online mention of your business's name, address, and phone number. Creating local citations, especially in the main directories (Yelp, Yellow Pages, etc., and those specific to your specialty) helps improve your Local SEO by showing Google that your company is a reliable source of information in your area.


  • 5: Make sure you put the link to your website in your GMB profile.


  • 6: Keep information consistent: Make sure your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) are consistent across all online platforms. Inconsistent information can confuse potential customers (and Google's algorithm), and damage your online reputation.


  • 7: Complete the category labels with the activities and services you provide, giving priority to those that you are most interested in promoting and that have less competition.


  • 8: Describe the services you provide using keywords, prioritizing them according to the criteria in the previous point.


  • 9: Analyze your competitors (especially those in the three-pack), to see what they are doing better than you.


  • *10: Respond to your Customers' Reviews: Responding to Reviews is a fundamental factor in Local SEO, and in significantly increasing your income. Be sure you respond to ALL reviews (positive and negative) with keywords, to show your potential customers (and Google) that you care about their feedback.


  • **11: Upload videos to your Google profile: Videos are also very important to position yourself on Google, and to stand out from your competition, since very few local companies use them.


By following these tips, you will surely greatly improve your ranking in local searches on Google, and your profits.
